On the 1902 Sanborn Fire Insurance maps, 224-228 is a four-story building, with basement, at the northeast corner of South Adams and Liberty. It is labeled as both the Fey Block and the Hotel Fey, with a sample room (tavern) and heating units in the basement, a lobby, dining room and kitchen on the first floor, a sidewalk canopy over 226 South Adams, an elevator and at least three outside fire escapes.

 

The Fey Hotel, originally built by owner David Fey as offices in 1885, was converted into a hotel in the 1890's, with 100 rooms, three bars, mahogany and rattan furniture and lace curtains. The hotel closed in 1935 and the building was razed to make room for a new Montgomery Ward department store. That building stands today and is home to First Mid-Illinois Bank & Trust.

 

Beginning in about 1924, the Hotel Fey began using 220-230 Liberty as an address, although still in the same building.

The 1868 PCD is the only mention of the Hotel d'Europe. Since early PCD do not have street indexes, it is difficult to know at which corner of Adams and Fulton this was located. It may not have been at the same location as the later Hotel Fey.
