Most city directories are divided into sections, as:
Alpha – An alphabetical list of all persons and businesses, with other information.
Street – A list of all streets, by address, and the occupant.
Business – A list of all businesses, sorted by business type, with other information.
Most city directories contain many typographical errors, which have been copied below as printed.
On the 1902 Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps, 533 South Adams, which is on the bluff side of the street, south of Bridge (now Franklin) and north of Walnut, is a two-story building attached to 529 and 531 South Adams, which at the time was a cigar factory. There is a stair leading to the second floor between 531 and 533. At the rear of this building are several out-buildings, including a dwelling listed as 533 ½ South Adams.
The only evidence that this was a hotel is a city directory listing in 1927, as the Adams Hotel, and again in 1929, as a hotel run by William K. Adams, though it is not listed in the business section under hotels. At other times, there are people living at “over” 533, meaning the second floor, as tenants.
Starting in 1932, 529-533 are listed to the hardware company Couch & Heyle, Inc.
On the current Google Maps view, this entire square block is now a surface parking lot.
Prohibition begins January 16, 1920.
